The process of getting a G license in Ontario typically takes about 20 months, although this can vary depending on individual circumstances. It begins with the G1 license, which is obtained after passing a written knowledge test on road rules and signs. After holding a G1 for at least 12 months—or 8 months if you complete a government-approved driver training course—you can take the G1 exit test to earn your G2 license. With a G2, you can drive alone but still have some restrictions, such as limitations on alcohol levels and passenger rules for young drivers. After at least 12 months with a G2 license, you can take the G2 exit test (also called the G test), which evaluates your ability to handle complex driving situations such as highway driving and emergency maneuvers. Passing this final road test grants you the full G license, completing Ontario’s graduated licensing system.
